Custom bicycle show coming to Richmond
-
Projects like expanded trails in James River Park, Forest Hill Park and elsewhere; a new rail-to-trail corridor in South Richmond; the continued development of the Virginia Capital Trail; greenways connecting city parks. All these efforts suggest a city transforming itself. The arrival of the North American Handmade Bicycle show is recognition of that transformation, and, hopefully, an impetus to keep it going.

Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation has proposed cutting – entirely and permanently – the Outdoors and most Adult Programs
-
Everything from kayak classes, ropes course, paddling at Dutch Gap to nature programs and practically all active adult programming are on the block. What is NOT lost is old fashion politicking: the squeaky wheel getting the grease. They said they welcome emails, attendance at hearings, pleas, and well-organized efforts. SO PLEASE! Get out your computer, pen, telephone, whatever. Write a letter to each PRAC commissioner (the Parks Commission is the appointed body that makes recommendations for funding cuts and allocations). Write them daily. Write the Board of Supervisors. It doesn’t matter if you live in their district or not. This is a regional issue.

Management plan solicits public opinion
-
At 1.1 million acres in Virginia and West Virginia, the George Washington National Forest is big enough to accommodate a multitude of interests and users. In numerous trips west the past couple of years, I've biked, hiked and fished on it. Others hunt, watch birds, ride horses, camp and pilot their all-terrain vehicles. Then there are the commercial interests - most notably logging - that have a claim on the land.
