Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation has proposed cutting – entirely and permanently – the Outdoors and most Adult Programs

Everything from kayak classes, ropes course, paddling at Dutch Gap to nature programs and practically all active adult programming are on the block. What is NOT lost is old fashion politicking: the squeaky wheel getting the grease. They said they welcome emails, attendance at hearings, pleas, and well-organized efforts. SO PLEASE! Get out your computer, pen, telephone, whatever. Write a letter to each PRAC commissioner (the Parks Commission is the appointed body that makes recommendations for funding cuts and allocations). Write them daily. Write the Board of Supervisors. It doesn’t matter if you live in their district or not. This is a regional issue.

TAKE ACTION NOW

CHESTERFIELD OUTDOORS PROGRAMS ARE FACING 100% BUDGET CUTS.           More Info

SURVIVAL OF THE DEPARTMENT DEPENDS ON OUTDOORS ENTHUSIASTS.

URGENT NEED FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION

Email or call Parks and Rec Advisory Council and Board of Supervisors. Let them know Outdoors Programs cannot be eliminated. (Email addresses can be found at the end of this email as well as a sample email.)

Sign the online petition here.

Send a letter of support if you represent an organization, including the far-reaching economic impact these programs offer the community.

Talking points can be found on savechesterfieldoutdoors.com.
Sample letters, petitons and a flyer can be found on the Facebook group under "Discussions". (And will be on  savechesterfieldoutdoors.com soon.)

We Must Be Heard or these programs will disappear for goodIf this passes, it will not be a temporary budget cut.

* All canoe and kayak instruction and programs will cease. No kayak instructions in the entire metro area.
* The challenge course will be shut down.
* Rockwood Nature Center will be closed.
* Nature programs for preschool and school groups will no longer be available.
* 10 summer camps eliminated. No half-day summer camps - only ones offered in the metro area.
* No family programs.

Half of the programs in the Chesterfield Parks and Rec program will no longer be offered. See the Guide for a complete listing of what is at stake.

Come to the March 4 PRAC meeting, 7:00p.m. to 8:30p.m, at Pittman-Eanes Bldg, 6731 Mimms Loop
Chesterfield, VA 23832-0040. We need to have a massive group of people at the meeting to show support for these programs. Other areas facing budget cuts - such as adult softball and soceer - have leagues and associations that will bring out their numbers. Outdoors is made up of individuals like YOU. We must show the Council and the Board these unique programs are essential to the health of the community.  You need not be a Chesterfield County resident to voice your opinion as the programs are open to all.

Call Janice Blakley NOW, Clerk to the Supervisors, at 748-1200 to sign-up if you wish to speak at the March 24 Board of Supervisors meeting. Slots are usually for 1-3 minutes. (Sign up now and if you need to cancel, please call her back so others may speak.)

Come to the March 24 Board of Supervisors meeting, 6:30p.m. - until it ends, at the Chesterfield County Public Meeting Room, 10001 Iron Bridge Road. The earlier people arrive the more likely they will get a seat. The supervisors, may at  some point, ask how many people are there in support of Parks and Rec, so the larger the hand-show the better. Of course, they might not ask that either. But the bigger the turnout--just in sheer numbers--the better.

More than 2/3 of participating programs in Chesterfield Parks and Recreation are in the Outdoors section yet this area is slated for a 100% elimination. Most of the county has a 5-6% budget cut.  We must let the Council and the Board of Supervisors know this is an outrage. It cannot be tolerated.

Subject: Save Chesterfield Outdoor Programs
To the Honorable Council Members and Supervisors,

Please reinstate Chesterfield Outdoor Programs. These programs are unique not only in the county but in Virginia. Outdoors is one of the leanest, most cost-effective sections in the county.

Outdoors teaches individuals to get outside and be healthy. Considering the toll of the obesity epidemic, Outdoor Programs is an excellent investment of county funds.

Sincerely,
